Do I want a HMD: Sure.
Notes: We're not really playing from any one Getter Robo canon, so much as kind of bastardizing a plot similar to the first arc of the manga into a prequel to Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo.
Background: Ryoma is the only child of a single father--a father who started teaching him to fight by the time he could walk. (His father was an abusive psychopath. He does not see it this way. Do not challenge his opinion on the matter.) He's an orphan by now, but fighting is basically all he knows; he never went to high school, and he's been banned from every martial arts tournament for petty claims like poor sportsmanship, use of excessive force, assaulting referees, assaulting other tournament officials, assaulting audience members...
His life was at a dead end, but his... uniquely specialized skillset has drawn the attention of Dr. Saotome, a groundbreaking researcher in the mysterious energy source known as Getter radiation. He's been recruited as the first of three pilots for a Getter ray-powered super robot--which may be the only thing that can stop the coming invasion by an enemy only Dr. Saotome sees coming...
Personality:
It's often said that the protagonists of Getter Robo are antiheroes or borderline antiheroes. Ryoma's the main character, and his main dysfunction is that what matters to him most is fighting. If he finds a worthy enemy, he can't not take it on. Strength and the acquisition of strength are what the Nagare family has instead of a religion. You get stronger by fighting strong enemies, so strong enemies are what he lives for. Backing down from a fight is unheard of; the more ridiculously impossible it is for him to win, the more he needs to.
For most shounen and mecha heroes, this is a good thing, and true, Ryoma's almost always a bad enough dude to pull off his crazy stunts. But even so, this is at least as much of a weakness as a virtue for him. He's reckless to the point of absurdity and has no sense of when continuing a fight is worth it. In extreme circumstances, he can get too wrapped up in a battle to realize he's endangering others. His fighting spirit isn't uplifting, it's practically an addiction.
Also like an addiction, Ryoma's outlook on violence has not had a positive effect on his overall lifestyle. He has a slew of antisocial habits and traits, which isn't surprising for someone whose favorite activity literally necessitates hurting people. He can get along just fine with people who aren't on his Fight This Person Radar, of course, and even a lot of people who are if they settle into a good mutual respect--but his punch first, ask questions later, apologize never approach to conflict resolution makes him plenty of enemies. It's because it's so hard for him to form close friendships that he takes his bond with the team so seriously.
Shockingly, he is not what you'd call the brightest knife in the crayon drawer. There's really not much to say about this to tie it into everything else about who he is: Ryoma's just dumb. He doesn't hesitate often, but every time he does it's because he's trying to figure out what's going on--he very frequently doesn't know. Fortunately he has a teammate and a half to think for him. (Whether or not Musashi is any smarter is very debatable.)
Ryoma may enjoy hurting people, but ironically, he doesn't really like to see people get hurt. Despite his dangerously macho attitude, he's not the type who's too tough to care, or has to be persuaded and guilted into doing the right thing. He'd fight anyway just for the sake of fighting, but he picks his fights based on who needs his protection. For all his flaws, he made the conscious decision to try and be a force for good.
Capabilities and Resources: Ryoma is strong. Ryoma is fast. Ryoma has Instincts. If it's a skill required for hand-to-hand combat, Ryoma's aptitude in it is borerline superhuman. He's only getting stronger as he keeps fighting, too.
On the flip side, he's terrible at basically everything else and can be easily outwitted by most field mice.
Type: Combatant
Unit Name: Getter Robo (Getter-1)
Unit Description: Getter-1
Getter Robo is a powerful super robot, and Getter-1 can generally be considered the form with the highest all-purpose combat capabilities, the other two being more specialized for different terrain. Its defenses are just average, and while its top speed is damned impressive, not all of it translates to elegant maneuverability. However, its strongest point is offense; Getter rays are a hell of a power source.
Getter-1's most commonly-used weapon is the Getter Tomahawk, a short axe generated from condensed Getter rays that can be thrown or used in melee; they're generally used one or two at a time, but come in essentially indefinite supply. It also has the Getter Beam, a very powerful blast of raw, weaponized Getter energy. For less fancy purposes, it's also designed to withstand bare-handed combat, punches supplemented by sets of razor blades on either forearm.
Of course, Getter Robo's defining trait is being a combining robot, and Get Machine Eagle is much less threatening when separated; it's basically just a highly maneuverable fighter plane equipped with some piddly missiles. Still, changing forms in combat (and relinquishing control to one of his co-pilots) is both a strategic utility and a quick way to dodge an attack in a pinch.
Size: L when combined, S when separated
Terrain compatibility:
Air: Yes
Ground: Yes (except when separated)
Water: No
Space: Yes
Favored terrain: Air, Ground
Upgrades:
Getter Robo can be equipped with external weapons designed by noted lunatic engineer Professor Shikishima, so there's a certain amount of canonically-endorsed room to just make up ostentatiously dangerous guns on the spot. If specific details/mod approval is needed, we can bring it up as it becomes necessary, since I for one don't have very specific plans for this beyond occasionally breaking out a machine gun or shotgun.
Wingmen: Not NPCs. Well, except for Tatsuhito at first; he's only going to be around for one mission, though, and you'll be getting another app that technically has his mech details in it. He's just a kind of generic cool guy who wants to help his dad save the world.
Mission requirement: Probably we can just say that Ryoma, at least, is already at the Saotome Labs, which can become affiliated with the Unity Group after the first mission.
Suggested Event List:
Arc 1
Event Post 1 - Hayato Intro
I'll leave this one up to Hayato-mun!
Mission 1 - Change! Getter Robo!
Shortly after Hayato's arrival, a powerful Mechasaurus attacks! The team must fight their way to the hangar, where Hayato is strapped into Jaguar against his will, with Ryoma piloting Eagle and Dr, Saotome's son Tatsuhito in Bear. With the mighty Getter Robo in action for the first time, the attack is repelled! However, due to prior injuries from test-piloting, Tatsuhito does not survive the battle. At this point, Hayato may or may not gain control of the robot and go on a post-victory rampage that Ryoma has to stop by Improvising. The aftermath of this mission has Dr. Saotome mourning the loss of his son, and Hayato probably in confinement. The Getter team, however, is now officially part of the Unity Group.
Event Post 2/Mission 2- Musashi Intro
And again, I'll let Musashi-mun decide how to handle this stuff!
Arc 1 End
Mission 3 - The Dinosaur Empire
Three Mechasauruses at once! This new level of danger is accompanied by the source of these attacks finally showing his face. Emperor Gore, backed by his cohorts General Bat and Chief Galilei, broadcasts an announcement across Earth: the Dinosaur Empire, living underground since their ancestors went extinct, is here to reclaim the surface world by killing all humans. It would seem, however, that the dinosaurs have only one weakness: Getter rays! It turns out that Saotome discovered all of this years ago, his research into Getter energy proving to him that it caused the mass extinction of the Mesozoic era and helped advance mammalian evolution. He discovered evidence that there was a civilization descended from the Dinosaurs biding their time underground, but since no one would believe him, he could only build Getter Robo and plan by himself. Mostly just combat interspersed with exposition here!
Mission 4 - Hellish Terror of the Newts
IT'S RAINING NEWTS! The newts are genetically engineered to be extremely poisonous and probably bite people. This can, for some reason, only be the work of the Dinosaur Empire! After a short on-foot section, it turns out the newts are being dispensed by a large mechasaurus to which the Unity Group must lay siege.
Mission ???
Mechasaurus...es of all sorts can attack whenever, without much plot advancement. That's what makes them monsters of the week! If you guys need a simple list of them to draw from, I'll see what I can do.
Mission 5 - The Power of Getter
A strange, jellyfish-like mechasaurus attacks, and it seems to be impervious to damage; it just absorbs energy and grows larger and more powerful! Ultimately, the Getter team discovers that the secret to destroying it is filling it with more energy than it can handle. In other words, brute force wasn't working because they weren't using enough.
Arc 2
Mission 6 - Twister of Terror
A city, any city that's convenient, is attacked by flying Mechasauruses that can generate tornados so powerful they can burrow through solid stone, the plan being to dig underground until the city collapses in on itself. All but one of them are destroyed before the plan can succeed, but the last one beats a retreat by burrowing all the way back down to Dinosaur Empire HQ underground. Capitalizing on its stupidity, the Getter Team plunges recklessly in after it to make an assault at the heart of the enemy!
Event Post 4/5/however many seems appropriate - Infiltrate the Dinosaur Empire/Ryoma Punches Dinosaurs
A crash landing sees the team separated underground. (Any other mission/arc participants can also be on either of two on-foot action teams.) Getter Robo is captured, so Hayato and Musashi work on reclaiming it. Ryoma, meanwhile, is lost. In enemy territory. Rather than laying low, he of course raises as much hell as he can, ultimately charging Emperor Gore's palace on foot. He's badly injured in a duel with Bat, but they're interrupted by none other than Getter Robo, because Hayato and Musashi are actually good at picking reasonable objectives and getting them done!
Mission 7 - Three Hearts as One
Ryoma hops in Getter Robo, despite his injuries, everybody else gets to their mechs/the Unity Group finally sends reinforcements, and it'd be time to fuck shit up and get out of dodge--except that Emperor Gore, General Bat, and Chief Galilei all launch their personal Mechasauruses, extremely powerful elite units, to lead an army ofMookasauruses generic ones to block the escape route! Most of UG fights the bulk of the army, while Getter Robo takes on the big three! Gore, Bat and Galilei are powerful opponents, and Ryoma is losing too much blood to be at his best. The Getter team's only hope is to show those scaly assholes what real teamwork looks like, defeating them with a huge, dramatic combo attack! The chaos of figuring out if their commanders are still alive leaves the Empire in enough disarray for the UG team to escape.
Mission 8 - Musashi Saves the World
Humiliated but not beaten, the Dinosaur Empire (Gore, Bat and Galilei survived, for the record) moves forward with its final, most drastic plan. They surface Machine Land, a mobile fortress armed with a gigantic terraforming device; if not destroyed, it will revert Earth's climate and atmosphere to the state it was in during the Mesozoic era, making human life much more difficult and allowing the entire army of the Dinosaur Empire to easily make a long-term march on the surface world. They're doing everything in their power to protect the doomsday device, with hundreds of generic Mechasauruses guarding it--and Ryoma is still in no condition to pilot.
Humanity's only hope is Dr. Saotome's latest invention, Shin Getter Robo; Ryoma sits in the cockpit, injuries yet again be damned, and Hayato helps calibrate it for launch while Musashi takes the original Getter Robo into battle alone. However, Shin Getter won't seem to start up, even as UG fights a losing battle against the Dinosaur Empire. At last, the order to retreat is given, but Musashi ignores it; he destoys Machine Land, and most of the Dinosaur Empire, in the only way left to him.
The detonation, or perhaps Ryoma and Hayato's reaction to Musashi's death, finally, ironcially kickstarts Shin Getter Robo.
Arc 2 End
After this point, there may well be no more plot missions, as whether or not we actualy do Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo depends on a lot of factors. However, controversy over Getter Robo's reactor meltdown sees all Getter ray-related research shuttered by the government. In mourning over Musashi, and perhaps also spooked by Shin Getter's mysterious powers, Ryoma will take a temporary leave of absence before returning as a combatant in any old mission that needs a dynamic entry.
